MM14 Moorland Access Reinforcement Mesh

Access is required to the Higher Moorland areas to allow shooting and general husbandry – sometimes throughout the year. Moorland Mesh is a specially designed mesh developed to allow such access to high moorland / peat areas.

Access on to the High Moorland areas had mainly in the past been achieved by using compacted hard-core laid directly on to the existing natural vegetation. The laying of hard-core roads was stopped because of the lasting and often irreversible damage done to regions that had taken decades reaching their present condition and have little powers of recovery. Some way was still needed to reach the peaks of the moorland.

Access to the moorland is most commonly achieved using a mechanized vehicle usually an Argocat.  To get the mesh to work, it needed to be structurally sound, cope with most weather conditions, be wide enough to handle an Argocat, chemically inert, able to drape over the peat, and have no or little effect on the vegetation.  Moorland mesh was developed from a special process and plastics.  It is wide enough (2.5m), for the Argocats, is strong enough to handle the weight (especially when entangled with the vegetation), has no leachate qualities and is relatively easy to lay.
