Fire access route using PP40 porous plastic pavers

A fire access route must be strong enough to withstand a fire engine. PP40 grass pavers provide the required ground stabilisation with a natural grass surface

Case Study / Project

Project:  Fire Access Route

Client:  Endymion Landscaping

Location:    Bluecoats Avenue, Hertford

Products:  PP40 grass paver with Grass Finish

Fire access Issue

To keep within fire regulations for all dwellings / work buildings it is required that a Pump Action Fire Appliance (12.5 tonne), or a Hydraulic Platform Fire Appliance (17.5tonne), must be able to get within 45 meters to all parts of a building.  To allow that to happen an access road at least 3.7m wide and able to withstand the loadings imposed of the Fire Appliances must be constructed to get a Fire Permit.  Also the Fire Access Road needed to compile with the latest SuDS (Sustainable urban Drainage Systems), and was required to be in keeping with surrounding landscape – a grass finish was essential.

Solution

There was a landscaped area between the buildings but it needed upgrading to be able to allow trafficking by the Fire Appliances. Suregreen PP40 Porous Paver is a plastic interlocking ground stabilisation grid that is designed to be filled with soil to produce a grass finish, and this was chosen. The benefits of the PP40 grass pavers were that they provided the required stabilisation capabilities, allowed rain and surface water to permeate through the permeable pavers into the sub-base beneath  Following Suregreen’s technical guidance freely downloadable from the Suregreen website, the fire access road was constructed using fully permeable materials throughout and to a specification able to manage the passage of the fire appliances.  The entire installation was done over several days.

Benefits

When the installation was finished the residents and the workers in the particular buildings were safe in the knowledge that in the worst case scenarios a Fire Appliance could reach them whilst operating the equipment in the best and most efficient manner.  The fully permeable access route would not add to water run off or requires additional costs in drainage.  When the grass has grown fully and entangled with the PP40, It will have an appearance of a landscaped grass area and so in keeping with local demands for natural areas.
