Project:       Gravel Car Park

Client:            Pelham Structures

Location:       New Community Scheme, Manuden, Essex.

Product:        PP40 Porous Plastic Paver

Issue

The New Manuden Community scheme is a mixture of new housing (luxury and social), a new community and sports centre and including newly constructed playing fields. The sports utilising the sports fields for winter sports as well as summer.  All these combined means increased parking needs with additional spaces necessary for visitors for sports events.  For the housing and community hall a tarmac car park was laid for daily parking needs.  What was needed was extra parking able to handle spikes of often intense periods of trafficking that could be used throughout the year that the sports fields plus social events would attract.  Also the area needed to be self-draining and porous to meet latest SUDS regulations and to reduce costs for additional drainage and to require little or no maintenance.

Solution

SUREGREEN PP40 Porous Pavers with a gravel fill was chosen to meet the requirements on site. A porous sub-base was laid and the PP40 plastic permeable pavers laid on to a mixed size sharp and angular gravel base to a designed construction profile and filled with the same gravel as used for the bedding . The parking area confined using 150 x 50mm concrete pin kerbs.

Benefits

An overfill car park was laid that met the levied demands. The car park could be used throughout the year in all but the most severe weather conditions. It is robust enough to handle often very intense periods of trafficking by cars and pedestrians. It is also completely self-draining to meet the latest Sustainable Urban Drainage requirements and costs were reduced because of decreased costs for additional overflow drainage. Also the car park was designed to keep maintenance costs to a minimum.
